Newsletter #110 Friday 22nd April 2022

Interim editor - Paul Cooper

OK, some bad news; Derek and Jan are filling their memory cards with street scenes in Spain so you have me as the editor for the next couple of issues. Yep, there will be website links!!

On a happier topic; Didn’t we do well in our IotY competition? I particularly liked Brian Galbraith’s honest but constructive critiques. Much more helpful than the usual “that’s nice” critique we have become used to. Much kudos to Liz for her gorgeous winning picture. Both the Falmouth Packet (out Wednesdays, see page 4) and the West Briton (out Thursdays, see pages 20, 21 & 35) have a feature spread on our winning images. I expect the Cornish Guardian and The Cornishman will have this spread, but I don’t take those.

Image of the Year by Liz Richardson

PCC Annual General Meeting. This was reasonably well attended and the committee were voted back for another year. Either we are doing exceedingly well or no one else wants the work. I’m hoping the former. Victor (Chairman), Maru (Secretary) and Mandy ( Competition Secretary) would like to step down next year so if anyone wants to shadow them with a view to taking over next year please let Victor know.

We have the results of the recent survey where 22 (from 34) members’ replies will help guide our program. In the pipeline are - Evenings out; Porthleven and fish and chips, Penryn walking tour, Falmouth at Night, Carn Brea-Sunsets. Visits; Guys Butterfly House - Penzance, Lifeboat Tour, Hayle - Paradise Park. If you have any other suggestions Karen would LOVE to hear from you. Dates and locations will be finalised and will feature in a future newsletter.

By chance, four PCC members attended the same weather-enhanced photographic walk through Falmouth run by Claire lle-photography.co.uk We were taken to places we didn’t know, photographed things we hadn’t seen and enjoyed a floating coffee on La Peniche. Our small world finds good company in many places.

La Peniche

Of course, I am not going to let this opportunity to promote our website (which several members are now using as a useful resource) pass by. Check out this page; https://www.penryncameraclub.org.uk/inspiration if you want some photographic inspiration. If you want a feature added just let me (Paul) know.

Lyrids Meteor Shower;

A little late but …. in 2022, we expect peak viewing in the dark hours before the last quarter moon rises. The best time to watch is between sunset on April 21 (yep, yesterday 😂) and moonrise in the early morning. The Lyrid meteor shower – April’s shooting stars – lasts from about April 15 to 29. About 10 to 15 meteors per hour can be expected around the shower’s peak, in a dark sky. The Lyrids are known for uncommon surges that can sometimes bring the rate up to 100 per hour. Those rare outbursts aren’t easy to predict, but they’re one of the reasons the tantalizing Lyrids are worth checking out. The radiant for this shower is near the bright star Vega in the constellation Lyra.

Meetings;

  • 7.30 pm Thursday 28th April – The last meeting of this season is Mandy’s fun quiz in the Penryn Football club venue. The roadworks stop at 17:00 so here’s hoping for a full house for this final meeting of this season.

  • The next weekly meeting will be Thursday 1st September - add this date to your diaries, or tie a knot in your hanky to remember to turn up!

If you save this link in your browser favourites you will quickly see any program updates; https://www.penryncameraclub.org.uk/progamme

Competitions;

The Image of the year is the 2021/22 seasons final competition so Breath ….. Relax ….. However ….. the committee are busy planning the 2022/23 season so make sure your cameras are around your necks and not in the cupboard as you need to start taking images for next year.

The club did receive an email advertising https://www.comedypetphoto.com if you would like to enter as an individual.

Diary Dates

PCC

  • SUNDAY 15th May from 1 pm – Banger Racing at United Downs. Tickets are probably going to be £14.00 each as a group rate. Even if Banger racing is not your bag don’t forget judges like images that are unusual and there are bound to be characters and crashes that are not your typical Cornish competition fodder. A few non-public access vantage points will be rotated between those attending. Please advise Karen if you are going.

Banger Racing at United Downs

  • Penryn Jubilee Celebrations – Monday 30th May to Saturday 4th June. Our club has agreed to record the various events throughout the week so members have the opportunity to join in and support the Penryn Jubilee Committee. Derek has sent out (14th April 23:07 email) a more detailed programme and would like two PCC photographers to sign up for each event if possible in order to provide some great shots for Penryn Town Council. Please try and put your name down for at least one event to help PCC support this celebration.

Penryn Jubilee Celebrations

You may also like to enter the local competition by sending a flower related Penryn centric image to this email address info@penryntc-gov.uk by May 24th.

Cornwall Photographic Alliance (CPA)

  • Friday 20th May 2022 at 7 pm - The CPA Annual Competition is being held at St John’s Methodist Church, Bodmin Road, St Austell, PL25 5AE. WE HAVE 30 IMAGES ENTERED.

This will be in the main Church which has 2 floors of seating with a kitchen for tea and coffee and lots of room to display the prints.

We will have the use of the screen, projector and sound system and a car park next door to the church and also disabled parking and access.

There will be 11 clubs competing as 2 clubs feel they are unable to join this year.

Western Counties Photographic Federation (WCPF) Member’s Exhibition 2022

  • This is a VERY prestigious competition and exhibition which showcases the talent we have in the West Country with prints and digital images shown at the Bovey Tracey Golf Club from 1st to 16th May.

  • We are thinking this might be an opportunity to organize a car-share for one of the days of the Exhibition, so please give it some thought. More later!

Best wishes Paul
