Penryn Camera Club COMPETITION RULES

1. GENERAL

1.1  Entry into any competition is wholly conditional upon the acceptance of the Competition Committee’s decision on all matters relating to entries.

1.2  It is preferable for members to enter new work where possible. However, older work can be submitted providing it has NOT been entered in Penryn Club competitions or CPA annual competitions previously.

A previously submitted competition image cannot be re-entered for further internal competitions after additional manipulation or change of format. Examples not acceptable include (a cropped previously entered image.) (change to mono or to colour / HDR of a previously entered image.) (Print to digital or visa versa).

1.3  Prints must be 7in x 5in or larger and must be mounted. – Window mounts are preferred for submission. However, flush mounted with a protective tissue cover are acceptable. All prints must be labelled appropriately, as advised by the Competition Secretary at the start of the season.

The only acceptable size of a mount is 40 x 50cm. in order to prevent damage to other prints in transit. Any mount not of this 40cmx50cm size will be rejected.

1.4  Digitally Projected Images may be either true digital images from a digital camera OR may be digitally scanned from a slide. However, they must comply with the current Cornwall Photographic Alliance (CPA) rules on size and format. This is currently (2019) a maximum of 1600 pixels horizontal by a maximum of 1200 pixels vertically. Maximum 1200 pixels vertical for “Portrait” format images and saved as jpeg (.jpg). NB This may change at any time and CPA rules shall apply unless otherwise agreed by the club members. Images must be titled as given by the Competition Secretary at the start of the season.

1.5  All work offered for competitions must only be handed to the Competition Secretary, or their deputy, at the designated time and location unless otherwise advised by them.

1.6  No member may enter any competition unless any fees currently due have been paid.

1.7  Notwithstanding any other rule, no print or digital image may be entered more than ONCE. The only exceptions allowed are the selected entries for the Image of the Year Competition

1.8  Entries must originate as objects recorded via light sensitivity made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as their own.

1.9  Direct off Camera Images are as stated, taken directly from the camera and the only manipulation allowed is a minor straighten and crop (similar to repositioning and masking of a slide photograph) plus a resize complying to section 1.4 above. There must be no other software manipulation other than software within the camera body.

2 PRESIDENT’S CUP

Digital image and print may be monochrome or colour and entered following the guidelines given by the Competition Secretary at the beginning of the season. The Judge will indicate the overall winning image selected from the submitted digital images and prints entered.

3 KEN FARNELL CUP

3.1  There are different categories to enter as detailed by the Competition Secretary at the beginning of the season. Each entrant’s scores for each category through the season are aggregated with the winner being the one with the highest aggregate score. The categories may change from year to year and are decided by the Committee.

3.2  KF Prints and Digital categories available for entry will be given by the Competition Secretary at the start of the season.

4 GENERAL SHIELD

4.1  These competitions are run on the same evening as the Ken Farnell Cup, with the subject matter being OPEN. Each entrant’s scores for each of the competitions through the season are aggregated with the winner being the one with the highest aggregate score.

4.2  General Print and Digital categories available for entry will be given by the Competition Secretary at the start of the season.

5 KEN MAYNARD SHIELD

5.1  Digital image and print may be monochrome or colour and entered following the guidelines given by the Competition Secretary at the beginning of the season. The Judge will indicate the overall winning image selected from the submitted digital images and prints.

5.2  Set subject is any living thing except humans and plants. E.g. Acceptable subjects are Animals, birds or insects and fungi.

6 IMAGE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

Any image entered including both print and digital MUST HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY ENTERED FOR COMPETITIONS (Sections 2 to 5 above) IN THE CURRENT SEASON TO QUALIFY.

Available categories as indicated by the Competition Secretary at the beginning of the season

7 DENNIS WATSON TANKARD

Cumulative total of all marks given to the individual member within the current season competitions.

Therefore, this award is more favourable to members who have:

a) Supported the current competition programme
b) Have gained good scores in the various competitions

8 OUTSIDE COMPETITIONS

Any season’s work may be submitted to the Competition Committee for consideration to represent the club. The Competition Committee have the final decision regarding entries submitted. The image must not have been used in the CPA annual competition previously.

9 DEFINITIONS (PAGB)

9.1  Black and White A black and white image fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey.

A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category.

9.2  Colour A work consisting of various colours across the spectrum and additionally: A black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work to stand in the colour category.
